Perfect Fall Coats | What to Wear
I am often asked questions by my readers and followers about what to wear. And I absolutely love answering these “what to wear” questions. So if you have a question that you would like me to answer, you can ask it here and I will try my best to answer it. This week’s style question comes from Melissa T.
“I’m looking for a versatile Fall jacket or coat that I can have for years to come. Would like it to be modern but not overly trendy. I’m 53 and my style is very similar to yours. So no bold patterns or prints or colors. Thank you in advance.”
This is a great question! I love Fall and Winter specifically because it is jacket and coat season, and I love my coats. I tend to splurge on coats and jackets as I purchase classic and timeless styles that I will own for years to come. But don’t worry, I am sharing options at different price points that will fit everyone’s budget.
The Trench Coat
Oooooooh, I do love a good trench coat. There are so many options now and this style of coat has seen a resurgence in popularity. The trench coat is a timeless piece that never goes out of style. This versatile coat can be dressed up or down and is perfect for a variety of occasions. Opt for a classic beige trench coat with a belt and epaulets for a sophisticated look. Or choose a cropped trench if you don’t want the weight of a longer coat.
You can splurge on trench coats or shop more affordable ones. I have two from Burberry and I have 3 that are under $150. I’ve tagged these all below.
This trench coat style above is classic and timeless. The gold button details give it a bit more polish and interest. But if you prefer something a bit more neutral in style, these other options below would be also be great choices. Scroll over each photo for pricing details.

The Pea Coat
The peacoat is another classic choice that has been popular for decades. This double-breasted coat is perfect for cooler weather months and can be dressed up or down. Opt for a peacoat in a neutral color like navy or black for a versatile piece. And if you want the coat to really pop, look for some gold buttons to give the coat a classic touch. Price points for a pea coat vary greatly. I have selected several in different price points that would all make excellent additions to your wardrobe.
A pea coat will forever be in style. In fact, I have one that I have owned since 1998! I am not kidding. The only thing I have had done to it was have it tailored about 9 years ago to create a more fitted look. The style in the late 90s was oversized and being in my 20s, it felt right. But the coat sat in my closet for years because my style evolved into more tailored clothing. Rather than give it away, I spent about $85 to have it tailored. The pea coat above is an affordable options and brings a classic silhouette and look. The gold buttons just add a touch of elegance and, personally, I like this, especially on days when my outfit would be more casual; this will just give it a bit more polish. I’ve tagged several affordable options below in neutral colors.
