How to Incorporate the Leopard Print Trend Into Your Wardrobe
Leopard print is a bold, timeless trend that’s been popping up more and more, especially for fall. For women over 40, it’s about striking a balance between chic and subtle, allowing the print to enhance rather than dominate your look. Trends are typically not an area where I invest money, so I wanted to be true to this and stay within a budget. All items here are under $150.
Here are some tips on how to incorporate leopard print into your wardrobe without going overboard.
1. Start with Accessories
I’m all about accessorizing. And I feel like an accessory here and there can be a subtle way to hop on a trend, without investing a ton of money or feeling overwhelmed. A leopard print scarf, handbag, or pair of shoes adds a touch of fun without taking over your outfit. For me personally, I am adding these leopard print sling backs into my Fall and Winter wardrobe this season and this super affordable pair of leopard print flats. They are perfectly leopard enough and the sling back style gives me an option to be dressier while the flat gives me absolute comfort. But there are other ways to accessorize that still hold to a classic and timeless style.
- Tip: Pair a leopard belt with a classic outfit like jeans and a white blouse to add an unexpected pop of style.
- Tip: Add a thin scarf and a chain to your top to add some unexpected but chic polish. Check out my tutorial on this here.
2. Layer with Neutrals
One of the best ways to keep leopard print classy is to pair it with neutral colors. Think of black, beige, camel, or grey tones as the perfect backdrop for the print to shine in a sophisticated way. While we are seeing a a return of red and rouge this season, and it looks divine with leopard, I’d still stick to more neutral tones you most likely already own.
- Tip: A leopard-print blouse like this one worn under a black blazer or cardigan instantly elevates your look while keeping the print subdued.
3. Stick to One Statement Piece
When wearing leopard, less is more. Choose one statement piece and keep the rest of your outfit simple. A leopard-print coat or dress can make a powerful statement, but balance it with minimalist jewelry and neutral shoes.
- Tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, try a leopard-print skirt like this one with a solid black sweater for a bold yet elegant look.
4. Opt for Subtle Patterns
If you’re hesitant about bold leopard prints, look for pieces with a smaller or more abstract version of the pattern. Subtle variations can have a chic, understated effect that still embraces the trend.
- Tip: These pants work because they have a small-scale leopard print paired with a simple white button down, making for a stylish way to dip your toes into the trend.
5. Leopard Outerwear
A leopard-print coat or jacket can be an easy way to incorporate the trend, like this one here, especially when the rest of your outfit is understated. The print adds just enough personality while keeping things refined and age-appropriate.
- Tip: Layer a leopard-print coat over a monochrome outfit (like all black) to make it the star of the show without feeling too flashy.
Leopard print is a fun trend that works beautifully in any wardrobe when done right. Whether you introduce it through accessories or go bold with outerwear, the key for women over 40 is to keep the look polished and balanced. Incorporating just one statement leopard piece at a time allows you to stay on-trend while maintaining elegance and sophistication.
