How do I choose the right accessories to elevate my outfit?
When it comes to elevating a classic outfit, the right accessories can make all the difference. Here’s how to choose them:
Start with a Statement Piece: Whether it’s a bold necklace, a pair of striking earrings, or a standout handbag, choose one statement accessory that becomes the focal point of your outfit. This adds personality and flair to a classic look without overwhelming it. In this look below, the standout piece is this Chanel inspired necklace. I added a small clutch so that my handbag wouldn’t compete with the outfit.
Balance Proportions: If you’re wearing a more tailored or fitted outfit, consider adding softer, more fluid accessories like a silk scarf or delicate jewelry. Conversely, if your outfit has a looser silhouette, structured accessories such as a leather belt or a structured handbag can add polish. Take for example this dress. It is long and flowy. The belt adds structure, while the chunky gold bracelet adds interest. The handbag and shoes don’t compete with the look whatsoever. The focus is the belt and then the bracelet.
Consider the Occasion: Tailor your accessories to the event. For a formal occasion, opt for classic pieces like pearls or metallics. For a casual day out, playful accessories like colorful scarves or chunky jewelry can add a fun touch. I am usually in jeans or trousers paired with a button down or sweater. In summer, on hot days, I will be in a dress. So for my more casual days, I opt for chunky gold jewelry to add some interest to what would otherwise be a simple and basic look.
When I am getting dressed for an occassion, I am 95% of the time going to be in a black dress. This one (below) is under $50 and is SO good. And I love how gold pops off of black. I added a tennis necklace, a gold handbag and pair of shoes that blend but also add interest. Everything in this look was under $70, and it comes across elegant.
Mix Patterns and Textures: Don’t be afraid to mix gold with silver or add a textured element or pattern to your look. When mixing patterns, stay in the same color family to seamlessly blend the elements. Mixing gold and silver is also a fun way to add interest. In the example I provided above, I mixed gold with silver. The shoes are silver but because it’s on the bottom, it doesn’t compete with the gold. It stands on its own.
Mind Your Shoes: Shoes are a critical accessory that can change the entire vibe of an outfit. Classic pumps or loafers will keep your look polished, while a trendy boot or a chic flat can add a more relaxed, contemporary edge. This look pairs stripes on top with leopard mules on the bottom. It works because all the colors blend together easily.
Don’t Forget the Power of a Belt: A well-chosen belt can define your waist, add structure, and pull your whole outfit together. It’s a simple addition that can have a significant impact. It’s super rare that I am not wearing a belt. But, I get that this may not be for everyone. I still would urge you to give it a try. It adds dimension and interest to any outfit.
Keep It Cohesive: Ensure that your accessories complement each other and your outfit. They should enhance your look, not compete with it. Stick to a color palette or theme that ties everything together.
Remember, accessories are the finishing touches that express your personal style. Even with a classic outfit, the right accessories can make it uniquely yours. Experiment with these ideas and find some that work for you look and style.
